NEW MEDIA INSTALLATION • KLUB K4 • 2019
In 2019, I had the exciting opportunity to create a new media installation for the special “Just A Dance” event at Club K4. This installation, which was displayed on the small floor throughout the event, combined retro aesthetics with modern projection mapping techniques to create an immersive visual experience.
Project Concept and Inspiration
The installation was inspired by the nostalgic charm of vintage technology and the vibrant energy of club culture. I aimed to blend these elements to create a visually striking piece that would captivate and engage the audience. The choice of using old CRT computer screens and a mannequin torso was deliberate, as it allowed me to play with textures and forms that would react uniquely to the projected animations.
Creative Process and Techniques
The creation of this installation involved several key steps:
- Selection and Preparation of Objects: I sourced two old CRT computer screens and a mannequin torso, which I then painted white. The white paint provided a neutral canvas that enhanced the visibility and vibrancy of the projected animations.
- Projection Mapping: Utilizing the club’s projector, I meticulously mapped the projection onto the objects. This process involved calibrating the projector to ensure that the animations aligned perfectly with the contours and surfaces of the CRT screens and the mannequin torso.
- Creation of Animations: For the visual content, I created a series of retro, colorful VHS glitchy animations. These animations were designed to evoke a sense of nostalgia while adding a dynamic and contemporary twist to the installation.
- Integration and Testing: Once the objects were painted and the animations were ready, I integrated the projection mapping setup and conducted thorough testing. This ensured that the visuals interacted seamlessly with the objects and produced the desired effect.
Outcome and Impact
The final installation transformed the small floor of Club K4 into a vibrant and immersive space. The retro VHS glitchy animations projected onto the white CRT screens and mannequin torso created a mesmerizing visual experience that resonated with the club’s atmosphere. Attendees were drawn to the installation, experiencing a unique blend of retro aesthetics and modern technology.
